The fall lineup of DataGen AcademySM educational programs begins Wednesday, September 23, with Introduction to Understanding Administrative Data and Case Mix. This program, held 10 a.m. to noon, will cover using and comparing data to anticipate cash flow.

The session will also include an initial look at All Patient Refined Diagnosis Related Groups (APR-DRGs) that will be implemented for many New York State payers effective December 1. Included will be an overview, sample statewide historical data, and tips and tricks that will apply under the new methodology.

Registration information is available online.

This Webconference will explain how to analyze and compare inpatient hospital statistics using data hospitals report to the Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System (SPARCS). Participants in the session will receive 2.0 hours of continuing education credits from the American Health Information Management Association. At the conclusion of this program, participants will:

  • have command of the data collected and reported to SPARCS;
  • understand the similarities and differences between the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and New York State grouping methodologies and how they affect DRG assignment;
  • understand DRG methodologies to more effectively compare and evaluate cases;
  • understand how various administrative data can be used to evaluate hospital operations, including comparison to other facilities both locally and nationally; and
  • identify limitations of comparisons to understand the pitfalls and benefits of certain methodologies.

The September 23 session is the first of a series of upcoming DataGen Academy programs. Additional classes will cover finance and reimbursement, quality, planning and development, and other topics. Go online for a complete DataGen Academy schedule.

With Medicare regulations and coding rules constantly changing, staying current with this complex and ever-evolving reimbursement system can be challenging.
